Different people approach the concept of the internet with different mind – sets; to some people it is just a collection of the various networks, according to some it is a collection of the servers connected with the help of some of the common protocols – but a huge fact is that the INTERNET has developed as an electronic medium at the world stage. It is actually the global connection between the computers, with the help of which the individuals can send e – mail, make travel bookings, order books and lots more.

It is actually the ‘Super – Highway’ of the information in the world and is generally referred to as the ‘networks of the networks’

History of the Internet
The birth of the internet was not at all planned but has been developed evolutionary as a result of the necessity. The 1950s and the 1960s observed the birth of the networks – that later lead to the formation of the internet. The 1970s observed the growth of the internet with the coming up of the store – and – forward technology.

The 1980s acted as the critical decade for the development of the internet at the global scale. During the 1990s major developments took place like the coming up of the WWW or W3 by CERN.

The development and the use of the internet has become possible due to some of the following factors –

3. Telecommunication technology and the standards.
4. The computer itself.

The intranets are for the private use unlike the internet.

The Extranet
This type of the network is actually the combination of the internet as well as the intranet. It is actually semi – private having the servers that are designed for a specific users like the company’s suppliers, customers etc.
