Briefly Explain about Internet

Introduction
Internet can be defined as an electronic medium, which today is connecting the whole world with the help of the computers. Internet consists of large amount of data that can be accessed by the various users – and because of this it is also referred to as the ‘Information Superhighway’ of the world. With the help of the internet one can easily be in touch with any one in the whole world by sending electronic mail, by chatting etc., travel bookings can be made very easily, one can order books or buy anything online – in simple terms it can be said that internet provides a very strong connection or network between computers globally, bringing people and their working close to each other.

The network of networks – ‘The Internet’ is not a personal property of any one i.e. it is not owned by anyone, which allows individuals and the various organizations to get connected to any other server or any other user.

Internet has become such an important and defining tool in todays competitive and market oriented environment that it helps a lot in getting business and making money.

History of Internet
In recent past, the way the internet has spread its wings is extra ordinary and experts say that there is no doubt that internet has become a very important factor of life both at a personal level as well as at the business level, but the way it’s development has taken place in so much quick succession this kind of response was not at all expected by anyone. The main reason behind the fact that such a tremendous growth has taken place is that the internet was a necessity and was very much needed at the stage of business which has resulted in such an evolutionary performance worldwide.

In the 1950’s and 1960’s – the various networks came into light, which later on led to the formation of the internet. Internet first came in front of the world in the 1970’s and it was during this decade only, when the electronic mail came into use for the first time. Then after this decade, a large amount of growth was seen in the 1980’s and the 1990’s.

In 1991, www or W3 or World Wide Web was released by CERN. W3 acts as a graphic medium and has played a very important role in the development and growth of the internet.

Advantages/Benefits of the Internet
1. Helps in reducing the costs of communication, as one can very easily be in touch and communicate with each other with the help of chatting, electronic mail etc.

2. Acts as a very strong source or a tool at the corporate level, as it helps, inter alia, brings business and helps in generating revenue.

3. Communication and also the coordinating ability between the individuals have been enhanced.

4. Customer satisfaction and customer service have been improved at a very large scale.

5. One can very easily go through or access the various data or the information needed by an individual, hence having a very positive effect in speeding up the whole process of the distribution of knowledge.

Disadvantages of the Internet
1. Legal problems.
2. Problems related to security.
3. Technological problems.
4. Lacking behind in standards as a result of following the same traditional internet culture.
